I use a variety of surface design and fiber techniques, including fabric discharge, transfer with disperse dyes, image transfer, and felt making. Most recently, I have returned to the making of art quilts creating highly textured surfaces with extensive machine quilting.
Fabric has proven to be a familiar and comfortable medium. So many people have stories and fond memories about women who lovingly made quilts. I use this familiarity to invite the viewer into my abstract world: a place where color, shape, line and texture suggest the ongoing tension between the cyclic and the linear, between chaos and organization. I balance this tension with a bit of humor, whimsy, and nostalgia and this tension serves as the playground for exploring relevant topics and concepts. My current work is crafted around the theme of “The Things We Carry.” Here I explore the weight of what we hold… both literally and figuratively and the strength required each day to put one foot in front of the other.
